Senate Will Not Vote On Hate Bill This Week

By Rev Ted Pike
9 May 2007

Despite announcement by the www.senate.gov website that the federal hate bill S. 1105/H.R. 1592 "may receive floor action this week," the Senate Judiciary Committee as well as the offices of Sens. Kennedy and Smith (sponsors of the hate bill) now confirm that S. 1105 will remain in the Senate Judiciary Committee until next week.
Earlier, I was told by aides of Kennedy and Smith that every effort would be made, with the assistance of Sen. Patrick Leahy, head of Judiciary, to work with Sen. Harry Reid to bring the hate bill to a vote by Friday. Now it appears that unexpected delays over Senate consideration of the FDA bill are rapidly removing the possibility of a hate bill debate and vote this week.
As a possible sign that Senate Democrats may be increasingly uneasy about the certainty of passage of S. 1105, I was told that pro-hate bill leadership may now consider submitting the bill as a rider on large, easy-to-pass legislation. Final mark-up and exit from Judiciary is expected at the beginning of next week. Incredibly, no hearings on S. 1105 have been held or are scheduled in Judiciary.
The delay of S. 1105 is a godsend to all who love freedom. It allows us precious days to continue to bombard Senate members with calls, e-mails, letters, and faxes. Callers report to the National Prayer Network that Senate receptionists say opposition to S. 1105 is now "very heavy." Our continued communications throughout next week are vital only to defeat the hate bill. Just as importantly, we must reassure the President that, if the Senate passes this legislation, a powerful block of passionate Americans solidly support no compromise with hate bill forces and a solid veto.
Keep up the good fight!

At Truthtellers.org we list the 14 Republicans who voted for the hate bill in 2004 and also the 17 Republicans who are currently not declaring their stand. We must inundate these crucial Republican Senators with calls this week, especially informing the members of the Senate from our district that if he or she votes for the hate bill, we and our friends will never vote for them again. It’s especially important that you send your senator and his influential 8-10 aides my powerful flyer, “Anti-Hate Laws Will Make You a Criminal,"
Call the White House as well at 202-456-1111.
Leave this message: “Thank you, Mr. President, for promising to veto the hate bill. I expect you to also reject any modified hate crime legislation.”
