Obama Von Brunn

Among the myriad of disturbing qualities of James Von Brunn, the 88-year-old man who shot and killed a security officer inside the Holocaust Museum on Wednesday, is his apparent belief that Barack Obama is not a citizen of the United States and therefore has no right to the presidency.

The reason it sticks out is that, even among Von Brunn's other characteristics -- including heavy streaks of anti-Semitism, disdain for the federal government, and threads of white supremacy -- being a "birther" has a modicum of political credibility.

Certainly, the vast majority of people who are skeptical of Obama's birth in the state of Hawaii tend to be harmless conspiracy theorists. And there has been no suggestion that Von Brunn's distrust of the president's citizenship solely drove him to this violent act.

"In addition to being a birther," said Abraham Foxman, National Director of the Anti-Defamation League, "he also believed that Hitler didn't kill enough Jews. He had a history of anti-Semitic, hateful views."

Indeed a "birther" mindset is more a symptom of extremism than a cause.

That said, the extent to which the birther ethos has been driven into the political narrative by legitimate figures, and subsequently picked up by extremist elements, is noteworthy. In an obvious reference to questions about Obama's birthplace, Rep. Bill Posey, R-FL, has introduced a bill in the House requiring presidential candidates to file a copy of their birth certificates. Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-V.A, has joined him as a co-sponsor of that measure.

Several weeks ago, conservative reporter Lester Kinsolving, asked Robert Gibbs why the president would not "respond to the petition to requests of 400,000 American citizens by releasing a certified copy of his long-form birth certificate listing hospital?"

Outside political circles, but still within the national spotlight, the view is much more widely articulated. As late as two weeks ago, for instance, Fox News was running a headline on its website, asking: "Should Obama Release Birth Certificate? Or Is This Old News?" On Wednesday morning, moreover, talk show host Rush Limbaugh sardonically compared President Obama to God, noting that, "God does not have a birth certificate either."

Remarks like these aren't inherently violent. They can be picked up, however, by individuals who are.

"I think it is perfectly obvious that the birther movement has gained a large following on the radical right," said Mark Potok of the Southern Poverty Law Center. "It may have emerged form the right wing of the Republican Party. But the reality is that it has been adopted by the most noxious elements out there and certainly John Von Brunn represents that element."

Neither Posey nor Goodlatte's office returned request for comment.

Part II

For anyone to hate someone merely for the color of their skin, or their philosophical difference is sick beyond the definition. It is a neurosis that will devolve into a warped sense of self. If one can not find anything about him or herself that warrants respect beyond a superficial surface measure of oneself that is based upon their DNA...they are to be pitied above all others for that says volumes to their overall self worth ...in their own eyes which ushers in the need to demoralize or dehumanize another in order to appear superior. If I have to subtract from any of my fellow human beings in order to add height to myself...I already began at a deficient. And no amount of hatred can add one iota to my measurements. It baffles my mind how anyone can cease seeing the humanity in the eyes of their fellow citizen of this world. If only we would evolve into treating one another the exact way we would want to be treated ourselves. An instruction that has yet to be heeded by the masses.

Shannity is correct, we are on the verge of tyranny and the only tyrants I am fearful of are people like Von Brunn and the right wing media that is fueling this hatred.

All of this hatred from Republicans began when Bill Clinton was elected and continues to this day.

IMHO I have to disagree. It started when the pursuit of Richard Nixon's egregious unlawfulness caught up with him and ended his stay in our White House, thus smearing many of his fellow travelers. Those "far right of center thugs", who also had a big part in the murder of John Kennedy and his brother Robert, waited in hiding till they had another duly elected POTUS from the other party, a Democrat , to hound and chase, for no matter what reason. Their vendetta would show the true colors of "Get even" politics.

Regardless, the outcome of that chase, the failed Whitewater investigation, the thinly veiled accusations of the "murder" of Vince Foster, and finally, as it fizzled down to the sleazy probe into Clinton sexual peccadilloes, the "Far Right's" vendetta has only resulted in "turning off" hundreds of thousands of citizens, lowered the respect for those we elect and has generated a feeling in many to believe that sitting presidents aren't worth "spit".

And we, as a country, we as voters, our elected officials, all let us down. Bill Clinton was impeached for lying about an affair--some would say entrapment. While those officials pursuing him have all lost their elected offices, this country-our leadership- has not yet talked about the excesses and abuse of power. And they still don't!!

How much more do we have to take before the Dems strand up for our country!! This is a democracy. We did vote in this party and this platform by a large majority.

FOX, Limbaugh and others NEED to tone down the rethoric!

Unfortunately, their act consists of nothing but the aggressive rhetoric, partly for political reasons, partly because they pander to their audience of people looking for this exact thing.

I'd be content if just more people woke up to the fact that the constant hatespeech by the right is utterly incompatible both with Christian values *and* with actual conservative values.

Yea, like that will ever happen.

Boss Limbaugh was talking about Obama's birth yesterday right before Von Grunn carried out his horrific act according to the Keith Obermann's show last night. How scarry is that? The video Keith O. showed of Boss said that "Obama had one thing in common with GOD- no birth certificate, at least not one we have seen." A few hours later, according to Keith O. the man Von Grunn went on a rampage!

With the steady stream of vitriol from the right, it amounts to Indoctrination

They all must be held accountable for what they spew. It's time for Rush and most of the Fixed News folks to have to answer in a court of law for what they are doing to our great country. Along with freedom of speech comes responsability for the words you out out when you are speaking to millions of people on radio, print and tv.

All the little Lee Harvey Oswalds watch Fox and listen to Rush. There's nothing harmless about them, and nothing to be said in defense of the hatemongers who spur them into violent action.

With the steady stream of vitriol from the right, it amounts to Indoctrination , when you think about it, you wonder if suicide bombers get as much hate thrown at them.

If you are both ignorant and stupid is that a incurable condition?

I am afraid so.

Well, never say never. But I imagine it's hard to defend one's mind against the constant stream of hatespeech when one doesn't have the tools to work on their intellectual hygiene.

add in drunken drug-addled maroon and you have the perfect repthuglican prez!

First you have to remember that stupidity and ignorance are two different things, Ignorance is curable with knowledge and stupidity is a birthright.

The conservative right of the Republican party and FOX news should bear responsibility for enticing these extremists. It all started with Sarah Palin and John McCain in the presidential campaign last year and continues today. This is not the Republican party I so proudly supported over the last forty years.

Why are we not calling them out on this?

Hmm maybe because no one from the Republican party said "Go into the the Holocaust museum and start shooting people." How can you blame this on the Republican party as a whole?? "White supremacist" is not the same thing as "republican" there are republicans of all races.

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:54 AM on 06/11/2009

You're right that all this hate was given birth and voice at the McCain/Palin rallies. She fueled it with her inflammatory statements. (Thank you, John McCain, for inflicting this upon us.) Fixed Noise continued with their own brand. Talk radio ignorants fanned the flames even more with their irresponsible chatter, oblivious to the damage they can do. So many of us don't realize that yes, we do have freedom of speech; but with it comes a responsibility. Sad. Sad--what they're doing to our country.

Doesn't Sarah Palin have one foot in Alaska and the other in Russia? Where exactly was SHE born?

If you'd actully paid attention to politics, you would know that.

Wasn't McCain born in Panama????

People, I say let's rise up and support our President. We supported hm during the election. Let's not back down now.
Let's show him how much we love him back by supporting him while driving our cars.
Blow your horns or blink you lights twice on June 15th all day across the country.
This is not as as extreme as a 'tea party' but at least he'll know know that the ones who voted for him is there to stand beside him.

unfamiliar with the concept? Understandable. I've never felt it before for a president either. Accept it. Absorb it. Love is a beautiful thing ... and the healing of our nation. The "hate" thing can only destroy us. The cosmic page is turning. Time for a change!
